CHAPTER 12

“Ihope I have enough stuff to make a wreath,” Lucy said, staring into her bag of leaves, pinecones, and assorted items we had gathered on our trips to the woods.

“I bet we have enough,” I replied, glancing at her.

She looked up at me. “I don’t know. I should have gotten more acorns. I love acorns. And orange leaves. Why didn’t I get more orange leaves?”

I chuckled. “I don’t know why you didn’t get more orange leaves, either. But it’s not like we can’t just go back to the woods and collect more if you’re not happy with how the first wreath turns out. We can make as many wreaths as you want.”

She smiled. “Oh, that’s a good idea. I’m so glad you’re taking this class with me, Allie. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

I laughed. “I think both our lives would be pretty dull if we didn’t have each other. Think of all the fun we’ve had over the years.”

She grinned. “That’s true. We’ve done a lot, haven’t we? And we’re going to do a lot more.”

I nodded. “Oh look, there’s Patricia. Let’s go.”

We got out of the car with our bags of leaves and trotted to catch up with her. We had arrived early, hoping to get some time with Patricia to ensure we had enough materials to make a nice wreath.

“Patricia!” Lucy called.

Patricia stopped, looked over her shoulder, and smiled when she saw us hurrying toward her.

“Good morning,” she said as we got closer. “I hope you both were able to go back out into the woods for more leaves. We need lots of leaves to cover the wreath form.”

“We did,” I said. “We gathered a few more things to add to the wreath. No berries, though—we didn’t see any.”

She nodded. “I didn’t come across any either. I’m a little disappointed in that, but oh well, I think the wreaths will be lovely just the same.”

“I need more acorns,” Lucy blurted. “I should have gotten more.”

Patricia turned the key in the door and opened it. “I’ve got extras of various items, so you’re more than welcome to use what I have if you need them. There are some acorns, too.”

Lucy looked at me and smiled. “Oh, maybe my wreath won’t be a disaster after all.”

We followed Patricia into the room as she flicked on the lights and headed to the far table, setting her purse beneath it. We hurried over, pulled out chairs at that table, and sat down.

“Allie, has your husband found Don’s killer?” Patricia asked as she opened a large plastic bag she had brought.

I shook my head. “Not yet, but he’s working on it. That was the last thing I expected to see when we went out into the woods. It was so shocking.”

Her eyes met mine. “You can say that again. I can’t believe someone would just kill a person and leave him there.”

Before I could respond, the classroom door opened, and Mr. Winters hurried inside, carrying a plastic shopping bag. He rushed over to the table.
